Glenn Morris Stone-carving Workshop
Glenn is an experienced, trained teacher with an international reputation. He is a leading member of Sculpture Cymru, his works, predominantly in stone can be seen at MWAC.

This is a 2 day course costing £200 including all tools and a basic piece of stone.
All equipment including power tools, safety and lifting gear is provided.
(Note: please allow time for us to source stone for certain specific projects which will be charged at reasonable rates).Students are able to work in a variety of stones including marble, limestone, springstone, serpentine and alabaster.

Areas covered: Sourcing stone, planning work, tools, types of stone, safety equipment,basic techniques and a look at other sculptors work.
Carving: carving a relief and carving in the round. Maquettes and scaling up.
Concepts of direct carving, developing studentís ideas, finishing and mounting.

A delicious lunch and tea and coffee are provided. Accommodation is available at the centre at reasonable rates.

Building A Kiln With Jo Finch
Jo Finch is a national treasure when it comes to kiln building. We first came across him on a visit to Meri Wells' studio and saw the amazing wood burning kiln he built for her. Inspired by the wonderful possibilities for creating larger work, sculpture and surface firing effects we have asked him to build a kiln here at Mid Wales Arts.
Jo has ceramics in his blood, he was apprenticed to his father for 4 years at Winchcombe pottery before starting out on his own. He now has an international reputation and has built kilns as far away as New Zealand and India, he is in demand all over the world
This is a 2 day course which should equip you with the knowledge and confidence to design and build a gas and wood soda kiln and a small Raku kiln. Reasonably priced accommodation and excellent food are available on site. Cost for 2 days £100

Lino Cutting - Jeb Nichols
This course will give you the opportunity to learn lino cutting techniques from a practising professional artist and then give you the opportunity to experiment with overlaying designs using 2 or more colours.
Jeb is a talented, practising artist, printmaker and experienced teacher who is in demand to run courses throughout the UK. Suitable for all abilities, this will be a fun day encouraging you to combine drawing, imagination and design and explore ways of using this traditional printing method.

Linocut is a traditional relief printing method in which pieces of lino are cut away using special carving tools to create a design. The lino block/s are then inked up using a roller, and printed onto paper either by hand or using a traditional printing press.
£50 per person based on 8 people to include all materials for the day. A healthy organic buffet lunch can be provided for £7.50 Accommodation also available at the centre at reasonable prices for those from further afield. This is a popular course, booking essential.

Artistic Blacksmithing Courses With Spike Blackhurst
This practical course is suitable for beginners age 16 and over. All tools, materials and safety equipment will be provided. Attendees are asked to wear working clothes and stout footwear. After covering health and safety procedures in the forge tools and equipment will be explained and you will be shown how to light and use the forge.
You will have the opportunity to work on an anvil and learn how to manipulate metal using a variety of techniques. You will practice these techniques, learn how to forge hooks and pokers etc and then you will be able to use all these processes to create your own forged metal artwork
Group size is never more than six at one time to ensure personal attention.

One day workshops will take place on July 8th and 9th and August 12th and 13th 2017.
Cost £100 per day.

Sculpteen 2017
For the third year running Mid Wales Arts is running a series of Sculpture workshops for teenagers during the Summer holidays.

This year we will make good use of our facilities,using clay and firing in our new wood burning kiln. We will be making life sized versions of legendary figures who lived and worked in or near Caersws for public display.

This will involve teamwork, be a lot of fun, allow students to develop and work to their individual strengths and work collaboratively with professional sculptors. Students will learn scaling up, coiling methods, working with armatures, working in sections, sculpting and decorative techniques.

Every Wednesday during the Summer Holidays. 26th July,2nd, 9th,16th, 23rd & 30th August. 10-4. Students should bring a packed lunch and wear old clothes.

Children's Summer Holiday Workshops
A varied programme of fun activities for children 7-12 years. Encouraging your child to develop their imagination. Then theme running through these all of these workshops will be 'Imaginary Worlds'. We will encourage children to develop their own creative voice as well as using Welsh Folklore and Children's stories as inspiration.
Run by professional artists and experienced teachers in the art studio every Friday 10-4pm. during school summer holidays.
Activities will include clay, wire sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking and textiles.
Artists will include Sara Philpott, Nicky Arscott and Cathy Knapp
£17.50 per child(family rates).
Children should bring a packed lunch and wear old clothes.

Art For Well Being
Art for Well Being is a new Art Club to be held on Thursday mornings 10-12 in the accessible, well equipped studio at MWA.
There is an abundant variety of art materials, a relaxed, safe atmosphere, Pauline Forde, an experienced artist and therapist will lead the sessions, giving guidance, support, opportunity to express yourself in a free, creative way and have fun.
The group is aimed at individuals and carers who may be recovering or living with illness, either physical or psychological. Art for Well Being is offered to promote recovery, pleasure, diversion, achievement and ultimately an improved sense of well-being.
Art making can result in feelings of empowerment and inner peace through expression.

There is a maximum of 8 people per session so booking is essential.

Innovative Enamel Panels On Copper And Steel With Ruth Ball
Ruth Ball gained her BA Hons degree in Jewellery Design from Middlesex University, London, in 1987.
During her studies she achieved top prizes in the Royal Society of Arts Award and The Platinum Competition, more recently she was granted a British Society of Enamellers Bursary to study large scale enamelling in 2009 and achieved Commended in the Goldsmiths Craftsmanship and Design Council Awards in 2011.

Experience as a part time lecturer in Further & Higher Education, coupled with years of practice in trade enamelling, has meant that she has accomplished a wide skill base. Keen to pass on her knowledge, she was commissioned by publishers A&C Black to write a book about enamel techniques and she is now recognized internationally as being practiced in a variety of enamel methods.

Water-silk-paper
You will experiment with drawing and painting techniques on different qualities of paper and silk. Ruth Kirkby and Cathy Knapp will share professional techniques that can be transferred and developed in either medium.
Ruth won the RHS award for her series of paintings of Irises in 2016. She and Cathy are both experienced teachers with a love of learning, encouraging experimentation and pushing the boundaries.
Cost of the day £50 to include basic materials.

Pottery Weekend - Building On Form With Andy Warren
Due to the success of Andy Warren's Pottery Workshop in April we are delighted to offer another week end in 2017.

Andy has been making pots for over 40 years and is an experienced teacher. He will be giving a hands-on 2 day workshop suitable for all abilities. Over the 2 days you will have the opportunity to examine, discuss, study and practice various methods of forming shapes and build onto them to give a sculptural feel to your work. You will also use slips on leather hard pieces that will be fired and ready for collection 2 weeks' later. Cost for the two-day course is £110. A healthy, organic lunch is available for £7.50.
